You do not need to reach everybody. You need to reach the first people who are likely to listen, remember your name, and come back.

I know how tempting the big number is. A thousand anonymous plays sounds better than twenty real listeners. But when I look at this as both a musician and a businessperson, I would rather help you find the twenty. If they can tell you which song they liked, join your list, buy something, or bring someone else back, you are building a career asset. A play count by itself may disappear the moment the promotion stops.

Make sure the music is ready to be found

Before you ask for attention, check the path you are sending people into. Your artist name, song title, artwork, credits, and links should agree. The page should play the correct recording. The next step should work on a phone. If a stranger likes the song, they should be able to identify you and find more without conducting an investigation.

This is not cosmetic work. Promotion amplifies whatever is already there. If the path is confusing, more traffic gives more people the same confusion.

Start inside a real musical context

Your first listeners are rarely random people pulled from the entire internet. They are usually connected to a genre, scene, venue, collaborator, interest, city, creator, or existing community.

Look for the room where your music makes sense. That may be a local bill with compatible artists, a community radio program, a genre publication, a songwriter group, a producer’s audience, or a focused online community. Your job is not to invade the room with a link. Your job is to participate, understand what people value, and introduce the music when it belongs in the conversation.

Lead with the strongest reason to listen

“Check out my new song” makes the listener do all the work. Give one honest point of entry. Tell them what makes this release relevant without announcing that it is amazing.

the story or question behind the song;

the musical detail a certain listener will appreciate;

the scene, influence, or collaboration that gives it context;

the feeling or situation the song was built to meet; or

the reason this release is different from your last one.

Specific context earns curiosity. Hype asks for belief before you have given the listener evidence.

Ask for one action

A new listener should not be asked to stream, follow, subscribe, buy, share, save, comment, and watch the video all at once. Choose the action that matches where the relationship is.

For a first introduction, the action may simply be: listen to this song. If the person responds, the next action can be: hear the second song, join the list, or visit the artist page. Build the relationship in an order a human being would accept.

Use platforms, but do not confuse access with ownership

Streaming and social platforms can place your work in front of listeners, and you should use the tools that fit your release. For example, Spotify for Artists says eligible artists can pitch an unreleased song to its editors before release. Read the current Spotify playlist-pitching instructions before assuming an old process still applies.

But a platform audience is still a platform audience. Give interested listeners a way to reach your artist page, direct offer, or fan list. Discovery can happen anywhere. The relationship should not end wherever the first play happened.

Promote in rounds, not one giant blast

Begin with a small group and pay attention. Which message makes people listen? Which part of the song do they mention? Where do they stop? What question do they ask?

Use those answers to improve the next round. This is how marketing becomes a learning system instead of repeated shouting. My article Free Music Promotion Tool explains why getting exposure and doing real marketing are not the same thing.

Track signs of return

Early on, look for evidence that attention is becoming a relationship: repeat listeners, direct replies, artist-page visits, fan-list signups, purchases, or people sharing the song with a reason attached.

Your first goal is not to look famous. It is to learn who the music is for and make it easier for that person to return. Do that well enough, long enough, and you are no longer starting without a fanbase. You are building one.

Are you an independent musician working to build a real career from your music?

As a musician, you do everything a business owner does – you create and deliver products, manage schedules, handle finances, and do everything else a business owner does.
