It’s been more than 20 years now since I first touched an instrument and fell in love with it. For those who remember, in some schools there was a wheel program for middle school students.
What happened was that every semester, sixth and seventh grade students would rotate between different electives like art, choir, band, orchestra and so on.
The first rotation for me was art and then to orchestra. I never went past orchestra because the moment I picked up a double bass and pulled a bow against the string, I knew what I wanted to play right then and there.
In the years that followed, I enjoyed performing in concerts and competitions; I enjoyed collaborating with different artists, performing with different orchestras and even quartets.
There is a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from being a musician and being able to do what you love that most people just don’t understand.
But even more than that, my instrument and music became my place of peace; a place to go to let out my frustrations after being picked on in school, a place to express my weirdness and creativity at the same time, and a lot more.
I loved performing and watching people cry because they’re swallowed by sorrowful interlude in the midst of a cheerful composition, or watching a person light up when they become entranced by the sound of a full orchestra playing a piece they love.
… and still do.
Music for me, and I’m sure for just about every musician, is a way of life and a way of enriching lives not just for the person or people performing, but for those who listen.
Music is the one true universal language that crosses all boundaries to every man, woman and child on this planet. It stirs emotions, and even heals.
